Tuesday, April 10th - Lisboa / Estoril /
Cascais / Sintra / Ericeira

Breakfast at hotel, then out of Lisboa by 9:30 a.m. So much for that! First stop was the Casino Estoril, the largest in Europe. Closed till 3:00 p.m., so we went. Too bad! First glimpse of the Atlantic here. Beaches are very clean, well equipped and go forever. Cascais much the same. Drove along the coast to Boca do Inferno, with its impressive cliffs and crashing seas.

On to Cabo de Roca (the westernpoint in Europe) with its 225 year old lighthouse. Hundreds of feet above the ocean, it presents an impressive sight. Drove cross-county (narrow road 20' across, with stone walls on either side) to Sintra.

King of Mozambique visiting the Paco da Vila (Presidents Castle), so we did not. Lots of police and guards, who function was indeterminate.

Up to the Castelo dos Mouros, a 1200 year old Moorish castle overlooking Sintra and the coast. Splendid! Lots of stone steps. Eventually ran out of jam and couldn't walk anymore, so down to the car and on to Ericeira for the night.

Drove into Ericeira and stopped in front of the post office looking lost, because we were. A lady ran out of a close-by house and insisted we take rooms at her house. Sent Lee and Carole to check out the digs. They came out smiling, so we struck a deal; 2500 escudos ($22 CDN) per couple for the night.

Separate rooms and marble stairs; very comfortable. Wunderbar! Sprechen sie Duetch, so Lee interpreted. Seems the lady spent 10 years in Germany. Walked to the beach, with its sand and fishing boats, then on to the shopping area. Bought buns with butter and lo and behold, the man in the SuperMercado wanted to know how the Oilers and Jets were doing. Appears he lived in Winnipeg for some years. Supper in our rooms and off to bed at 10 p.m. Nice accommodation for first night potluck.
