Wednesday, April 18th - Tangier / Tarifa (Spain) /
Algecirus / La Linea / Gibraltar

Up at seven for a breakfast of coffee and buns. Our tour guide met us in the lobby at 8:20 a.m., then off by taxi to the hotel we were supposed to be in. There we met up with our tour again, toured Tangier by taxi through the European, Arab and American suburbs. Up to a viewpoint, where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet. Too hazy to see the Rock across what the Moroccan's call the "Detroit of Gibraltar".

Down to the inner city and we were in for more of yesterday. Narrow filthy streets and the usual troop of kids begging. Orange drink and tea in a restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean, then plunged right back into the market. Same scam as the day before; wind through the streets, then into the shop were high pressured salesmen hung onto you. All of us tiring quickly.

Then it was a long walk back to the hotel for a big lunch. At 2:20 p.m. we caught our taxi to the harbor and onto the fast boat. We cleared customs in Spain with no problems and took the bus to Algecirus by 6:30 p.m. Spanish time (lost two hours).

No problems picking up our car and drove back to the Rocamar Hotel where our luggage was stored. There were no rooms available there and we were told all the hotels in the area were full. Decided to take a chance and drive to Gibraltar.

Once on the Rock we found rooms at the second hotel we tried. Nice to read a menu in English again. Fish and chips for dinner and real coffee; what a treat! Took a walk downtown after dark with Merv. Very British and we felt secure for the first time in a few days. Back to the hotel and off to bed at midnight. Good to be in the Commonwealth again and out of that sewer they call Morocco.
