Thursday, April 19th - Gibraltar (British) / Huelva (Spain) /
Ayamonte (Portugal) / Albufeira

We started out the day with an incident. Went to get Carole and Merv for breakfast but they seemed reluctant to open the door. Turned out the lock wouldn't open and no amount of swearing helped. Seems the Queen wanted to keep Merv as a permanent guest. To further complicate things, the phone didn't work either. We finally got the desk to come up and use a master key from the outside. Reunited at last, we all had a hearty laugh over the British idea of a good joke. Ha, Ha! Went for a walk down Main Street to do a bit of shopping. Found another Rolex for 917 pounds ($2,085 Cdn.), but couldn't bring myself to spring for it. Nothing else too interesting.

Went for a drive up the Rock at 11:00 a.m. Spectacular views along the way. Stopped to see the rock apes that were out in force.

Starting the drive up  Gaining altitude, Spain in the background  Birds-eye view of our hotel  Lots of shipping activity
Breakwater  A short distance to Africa  Stairway down to the apes  These would have been supper in Morocco
The welcoming committee  Buzz off!  Lee with an offering  Peanuts were not the catch of the day!
Now jelly beans, no problem there!  An upstanding citizen of the 'Rock'  Hitching a ride  Kiss off!

Back downtown for lunch (fish and chips) and a British ale and one last go at shopping. On the way out we wanted to get a final picture of the Rock, so we pulled over in an enormous parking lot, right at the exit from Gibraltar. Got the picture but were immediately joined by four young British lads in uniform who drove up in a red emergency vehicle. Thinking they were inviting us to tea, smiles from everyone. "Do you realize you're parked on a bloody runway? Get off of her, drive that way and don't come back". Towards Spain of course. Ta ta, pip pip and all that rubbish. Assholes. Could have been a sign! Assholes. Kicked out of Gibraltar; oh well! Though customs and back into Spain.

Lunch in an outdoor cafe  Main Street, Gibraltar  View from the runway  An impressive rock  One last view ... from Spain of course!

It was an uneventful drive back thru Seville. Traffic crazy again. Drove by a road crew and one of the workers sprayed us with tar through the open car windows. Kicked out of Gibraltar, tarred in Seville. Everyone wondering where we're going to be feathered at.

A hacienda in the Spanish countryside  Spanish Grade A prime beef  One of the many flocks of sheep

On towards Portugal. Stopped in Huelva at a large supermarket to pick up grub for the road. Arrived at the border between Spain and Portugal by 9:00 p.m. and caught the last ferry across. The customs guard in Portugal wanted to know if it was in the north of Canada that French was spoken. No more bullshit! Told him east and off we went. We are all quite glad to be back in Portugal as it really felt like coming home. Even with all the hustle and bustle, it's still the best country we have been in. Tiring drive to Albufeira and on arrival, spent an hour trying to find our resort. Finally found it, the "Praia da Oura Club" and had to settle for a two bedroom suite until Monday, when our reservations kick in. Had a coffee and off to bed at 1:30 a.m.
